You’re invited to a stewardship celebration to remember – BogFest

A message from Gary Mascola, The Creditview Wetland Stewardship Committee (CWS):

This date is a must to mark in your calendars! Your children learn in school that community stewardship benefits all who participate – you and your family have an opportunity to participate in this amazing local stewardship event and celebration. Come out – find out how very unique the “Creditview Wetland” is.

Children can expect fun in the form of games with an environmental twist and also a chance to build nesting/feeder boxes that support local birds. Tours of the Wetland for young and old – that include pencil/water-colour sketching and photography will be organized. All can look forward to participating in stewardship activities such as planting shrubs and trees, removing bindweed, mulching, removing fencing and litter all to support habitat health. We will also provide a lunchtime barbeque for all that participate.

The Creditview Wetland Stewardship Committee (CWS) has great partners to make the Fourth Annual BogFest special. Students from Rick Hansen Secondary School and Fallingbrook Middle School are once again major leaders/planners, as are other adult volunteer community representatives. Great support continues to be provided by the City of Mississauga Parks and Forestry, Credit Valley Conservation and Councillor Starr & his staff.

Visit the CWS website www.creditviewwetland.org to find out what else we’ve planned for you. Last year over 300 community members participated. This year, we want to see you and your family, your local neighbours and friends to make this the best BogFest yet.

FYI: Pesticide Applications for Giant Hogweed in Ward 6

Information Item:

City contractors will be doing pesticide applications for Giant Hogweed at Erindale Park & Riverwood in Ward 6. Weather permitting, spraying will occur over the next few weeks. Additional parks where spraying will occur include: Sawmill Valley, Malton Greenway, Derry Greenway, Lakeside Park, Bonnie Brae, and Hewick Meadows. Pesticide signs will be erected 24 hrs in advance to notify park users.

What does it look like?

Giant Hogweed looks similar to cow parsnip and can be about 4.5 to 6 metres (15 to 20 feet) tall. The plant has:

  • Hollow stems with dark reddish-purple splotches and coarse white hair
  • Leaves as wide as 1.5 metres (5 feet) with hairs on the underside
  • Flattened oval shaped fruit
  • Small white flowers in the summer
    • What should I do if I come in contact with it?

If clear watery sap from the plant’s stem or hairs touches your skin or eyes:

    • Wash the affected areas immediately.
    • Avoid touching your eyes.
    • Stay out of the sun for at least 48 hours after contact with the sap to prevent a skin reaction.
    • Seek medical attention.

What should I do if I find it?
If you find Giant Hogweed in a park or other area, call the Mississauga Rec & Parks Department:

If you find Giant Hogweed on your property, remove the plant as soon as possible. We recommend you hire a lawn care professional to remove the plants. If you wish to remove the Giant Hogweed yourself, it is very important to take the following safety precautions:

    • Wear protective clothing, including gloves, long sleeves, pants, eye protection, rain coat and boots.
    • Avoid getting sap on your skin.
    • Immediately remove any flower heads to prevent seeds from falling and dispersing.
    • Sever the plant roots 8 to 12 cm below the soil surface.
    • Dispose of all plant parts in double-bagged sealed garbage bags. Label the bags with the words “Giant Hogweed.” Call the Region of Peel at 905-791-9499 (or 905-584-2216 in long-distance areas) to arrange for special pick-up, free of charge.
    • DO NOT compost or put in your yard waste or green bin containers. Giant Hogweed will not be collected at the curb.
    • Afterwards, wash the clothes you wore to remove the plant.
    • Return to the plant site periodically to remove any new plant growth.

Please exercise caution and avoid the marked areas as best you can. If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact 3-1-1 or to speak with the Ward 6 office directly, please call 905-896-5600.

FYI: Time-of-Use Rates

Time-of-Use Rates

Enersource is rolling out Time-of-Use (TOU) rates in Mississauga. Some Enersource customers have already shifted to time-of-use rates and some more are scheduled to do so in the coming months. They will notify you in advance of this transition.

If you have yet to receive communications that accompany your bill, your new meter will work in exactly the same way as the meter it replaced. But, your smart meter is an important first step toward building Ontario’s smart metering system.

You will be notified in advance of the implementation of time-of-use rates with the delivery of a brochure “Are you ready for time-of-use rates?” followed by an information package marked, “Important Notice About Your Electricity Rates”. If you have not received one of these packages, please contact my office and I will have one sent to you immediately.

With TOU rates, there will be three different prices for electricity:

  • Highest price – “On-Peak” (when electricity demand is the highest)
  • Medium price – “Mid-Peak” (when demand is moderate)
  • Lowest price – “Off-Peak” (when demand is lowest)

These prices will vary according to the time of day, day of the week, and the season

*Holidays include: New Year’s Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Civic Holiday (August), Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. In the event that New Year’s Day, Christmas Day or Boxing Day fall on a weekend, the next business day will be considered a holiday. E.g. If December 25 falls on a Sunday, since Boxing Day is already a holiday, you would pay holiday pricing (off-peak) on December 27, as it is the next business day.

Why switch to TOU rates?

Smart meters and TOU rates are being put in place by the Ontario Government to encourage people to shift some of their electricity use to off-peak hours. This will help save energy. It also will help the environment because if peak use gets too high, Ontario will need to build more generators to meet those peaks.

TOU pricing also reflects the way the electricity market works: TOU prices increase and decrease at the same times that market prices increase and decrease; market prices are higher at certain times of the day and week when demand is high and they drop overnight and on weekends when demand is low.

Here’s how TOU rates work:

Summer rates: May 1 – October 31

In the summer there is one peak period. It’s in the middle of the day between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm when air conditioner use it at its highest

Winter rates: November 1 – April 30

In the winter, there are two peak periods: in the morning, when lights, appliances and heating systems are turned on; and again in the evening, when people increase their energy use with appliances like stoves, dishwashers and TVs.

Weekend and holiday rates: All year

Electricity demand is low on weekends and holidays as well as overnight, so these are off-peak times with the lowest pricing.

Want to see how shifting your energy use can make a difference? Visit 10 Smart Meter Lane (http://www.ieso.ca/house/enersource/) to find the best ways to manage your energy use with TOU pricing.

Have more questions? Enersource staff will be visiting Ward 6 on 3 separate occasions to provide residents with information, answer any questions and provide guidance. Please see below for the dates, times and location:

1. Monday, April 2, 2012 / 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm / River Grove Community Centre, 5800 River Grove Avenue, Mississauga, L5M 4R8 / (905) 615-4780

2. Wednesday, April 25, 2012 / 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm / River Grove Community Centre, 5800 River Grove Avenue, Mississauga, L5M 4R8 / (905) 615-4780

Mississauga Extends Downtown Interim Control Bylaw

Mississauga Extends Downtown Interim Control Bylaw

On March 7, 2012, City Council extended Mississauga’s Interim Control Bylaw, continuing the hold on development applications in part of the downtown core.

“The City needed to put a hold on development applications last year to allow time to study what types of development would be most appropriate for Downtown Mississauga,” said Ed Sajecki, the City’s commissioner of Planning & Building. “We needed to ensure that development projects in the area were in keeping with the Downtown21 Master Plan.”

The Downtown21 Master Plan, Mississauga’s vision for a vibrant, walkable, compact and transit-oriented downtown, completed in 2010, is a key priority in the City’s Strategic Plan.

While the study was completed, the bylaw has been extended for one year to allow the City to hold public consultations, as well as finalize the Official Plan policies, a zoning regulation and design standards for Council’s consideration.

Background:

• The lands included are bounded by Centre View Drive and Rathburn Road East to the north, Hurontario Street to the east, Webb Drive to the south. The western boundary is Duke of York Boulevard, except for the area north of Rathburn Road West, which extends to Confederation Parkway.
• Zoning bylaws specify the uses and regulations on all land and property in the city, including how land is used, the size, dimensions, height and where types of buildings (residential, industrial, commercial or office uses) are located.

Update: Mississauga Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project

Mississauga Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project

Construction is well underway with the planned opening of the first section of the BRT corridor from the City Centre to Dixie Station in the fall of 2013. Once operational, MiExpress and MiLocal buses will utilize the exclusive busway and four new stations to bypass the adjacent road network to offer transit riders more convenient and shorter travel times to their destinations.

The next sections of the BRT corridor to be under construction will be tendered over the next few months for a late spring construction start. These include a section in the BRT West by GO Transit from Glen Erin Drive to Erin Mills Station and in the BRT East by the City from Fieldgate Drive to the Etobicoke Creek. Later this summer, the remaining segments will be tendered which include the section by GO Transit from Winston Churchill Station to Glen Erin Drive and the remaining City works from the Etobicoke Creek to Renforth Station. Construction in these segments is scheduled for completion in late 2014. The following PDF provides a graphical representation of the corridor implementation schedule.

Open House: Hurontario-Mail LRT Project Update

City of Mississauga’s Hurontario-Main LRT Project On the Move

The City of Mississauga’s Hurontario-Main LRT (Light Rail Transit) Project team will update the public on progress, timelines, next steps and provide information on LRT systems in cities around the world.

“In 2010, the City of Mississauga completed the Master Plan for the Hurontario-Main Street Study that involved technical analysis and public consultation that identified LRT as the best option for the corridor,” said project manager, Matthew Williams. “With the City of Brampton, we are now undertaking the Preliminary Design and Transit Project Assessment Process to look at requirements for the LRT system and need to consult the public.”

In December 2011, the LRT project entered into the Preliminary Design and Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) Phase. Williams explained, “This phase of the project ensures the system can be built the right way, at the right price and refines plans based on design, integration, public input and affordability.”

“We are now underway with the design concepts stage, and will soon be engaging stakeholders and the public to help us achieve a sustainable system, thoughtfully integrated in communities and fostering vibrancy, accessibility and connectivity,” said Williams.

In 2010, the cities of Mississauga and Brampton completed the ‘Hurontario-Main Street Study’ from the lakeshore in Port Credit to downtown Brampton. This city building project was identified as one of the priority projects for Metrolinx in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. The study combined land use and transportation and followed the Municipal Class Environmental Process. An essential part of the process was going out into the communities along the corridor to understand what people needed and wanted for the corridor.

“At the conclusion of the study we listened to the public and technical experts and LRT was selected as the best transit option for the corridor,” said Williams.

Grow your own herbs & vegetables on your window sill

This is a good time of year to start growing your own indoor herbs and vegetables because the April daylight hours provide the most important factor in achieving a robust yield. Some plants require upwards of 14 hours per day of direct sunlight (or supplementary light). Options abound – you can choose plants for their bouquet (such as lavenders), their fragrance (such as mint), or their flavour (such as basil). You can grow them together, as long as they have compatible needs. Growing vegetables is just as easy – try tomatoes, cucumbers or peppers.

Your planter is also important. Make sure it has drainage holes, so soil doesn’t remain saturated after watering, and you can watch for roots reaching for room to grow. Don’t use outdoor garden earth – use potting soil with basic fertilizer. If you get started now, with a little luck, you’ll see your herbs grow well into the fall – and, if you choose to add some artificial lighting, they can grow beyond that.

Take a look at the herbs and vegetables I currently have growing in my office. Peppers, tomatoes or chives anyone?
